These days, every day is a special holiday of some sort, and it kind of drives me crazy. But since it is a cold rainy, cozy day and the Boston area has so many great donut spots I just couldn’t resist guiding you to some of my favorites.
Sofra is the place to go if you want a great coffee with your donut. Or perhaps, you want to grab a delicious lunch before you pick up the kids. Indulge in a perfectly dressed, fresh salad with greens and fried cheese or have a flatbread, falafel or soup and leave with a white bag filled with small baseball sized donuts sparkling with sugar and spice.
I’m Canadian so I grew up with Tim Hortons but I’ve lived here long enough to know that this is the land of Dunkin’ Donuts. In a pinch, a drive through the Dunkin’ Donuts line is not my first choice, but it keeps me rooted in New England. Interesting news in the Dunkin’ Donuts kitchen is that they’re testing out a few gluten-free items including a sugar cinnamon donut.
If you’re going to save the donut celebration for the weekend, then head to Foundry on Elm for their beignets served with a chocolate sauce or a lemon curd.
I have to admit that I’m not usually a donut seeker. I tend to go savory over sweet, but every once in a while I crave a sweet circular fried dough treat and my favorite place to get one is at an “old school” nothing fancy, nothing fusion, and nothing complicated kind of place.
My first choice is always Linda’s Donuts in Belmont, MA. You’ll find all the classics and tables full of regulars each morning. Our whole family also enjoys the twisted donut (the doughy one, not the flaky one) from Tous Les Jours in H Mart if we’re up in Burlington shopping. Other “old school” spots we’ll occasionally stop is Ohlins Bakery in Belmont and Lyndell’s in Somerville.
I know I said, “no fusion” but if the azuki bean cream puff can count as a donut, then I’m definitely putting it on this list! The Azuki bean cream is from Japonaise Bakery in Porter Square, Cambridge and Brookline. I’ll also gladly accept the “dirt bomb” from Sweet Escape in Truro in the donut category as something totally crave-worthy and worth a stop. The “dirt bomb” is a donut/muffin tossed in sugar and spices.
Popular newcomer to the are is Union Square donuts. They’ve got unique flavours and a lot of heart and soul. I prefer a lighter fluffier donut than theirs, but I appreciate their flavours I especially enjoyed the orange ginger cream.
Similar but yet very different from Sofra’s Persian Spice donut is the Swissbäkers Berliner. It is also a round small baseball-sized donut and light and fluffy, perhaps a little less yeasty and more cakey than the spice donut and filled with curds, chocolate, or jams.
If you want to get something free, then head to Dunkin Donuts. They’ll give you a donut when you buy a drink. If you’re more of a cider donut lover, you don’ t have to wait for fall and apple picking season, Wilson Farm has cider donuts all year. Last, but not least I hear that Kane’s Donuts is not to be missed so they’re definitely on my “to try soon” list.
Now all I have to do is decide whether I want a honey dipped or chocolate frosted. What are you getting?
