I love spice.  I love hot and sour things.  I enjoy a nice spicy salsa and a flavourful plate of Mexican food with real chiles. I like my margaritas nice and tart with just a splash of sweetness.  That isn’t everyone’s taste though.  Perhaps you have an aversion to Tequila (yes we know about those college days).  Maybe you had one too many bad tacos (those college days again?).  If you are a fan of tacos try these local options for your Cinco de Mayo at home.  If not, fear not.

Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the victory over the French in the battle of Puebla in 1862. Puebla is a city South East of Mexico city and is known for mole Poblano, caramel-covered pumpkin seeds, desserts made with sweet potatoes and gaznates, which look a bit like a cannoli but are filled with a meringue or frosting.

Way north of the border, up in Boston, Kane’s has found a way to celebrate the sweet side of Cinco de Mayo.  I popped into the Boston location today to sample the Margarita donut.  I am very picky about donuts and there are only two places that are my “go to places” for donuts (with a few additional shops that I’ll pop in to for specialty donuts.)  My two tried and true places though are Kane’s Donuts and Linda’s Donuts.

The Margarita donut is nicely done.  It isn’t too sweet or too tart.  It has the raised dough that I like and just the right amount of margarita glaze with a candy lime for garnish that the kids will no doubt sneak off before I can stop them.

The Margarita donut is available now through Thursday May 5th.

Keep an eye out for the delicious and delicate lavender donut and rose donut topped with candied rose petals just in time for Mother’s Day (which is really every day, not that I’m biased).  The lavender donuts are available now and the rose donuts will be available soon. For your gluten free friends and family (actually these are good enough for everyone) try the gluten free chocolate, plain and also jumping on the citrus bandwagon the newest gluten free donut for the month of May: the orange baklava donut.
